SLurg Lesson 3
SLurg Lesson 3 mix
I haven't done an indie rap mix in a long time, so I figured since the genre is so popular in the blog world I could do another one. 75 minutes of indie rap from the mid to late 90's, from LA, New York, Australia and Europe. Enjoy.

rETURN oF tHE bOOM bLEEP
Here is an unfinished mix of electronica, hyphy, Miami Bass, Texas rap etc. I did one or 2 years ago but I lost all the parts when my computer crashed. All I have left is the mp3 of a rough mix with crazy levels.
I hope you'll enjoy it anyway.

Redman mix

. Redman best of, mix by SLurg
It's crazy how I always have new ideas for theme-based mixtapes, but unfortunately I never have time to actually put them together (rehearse the mix, record it, find someone for the artwork, manufacture the tapes, harrass stores to carry them, harrass stores to get the money back...).
I had the idea to do a Redman mixtape for years, but I never did it. The good thing is we have the radio show where I did the mix enclosed here (actually it's 3 different mixes nicely edited by Erwin). I didn't rehearse, so the mix are sloppy, the levels are all over the place and sometimes I just play the same record twice just because.
So don't consider this a Redman Mixtape, but just a radio show with an artwork made in 15 minutes by a DJ who can't really use Photoshop.

an ageing b boy wet dream
So basically it's like the One Blood remix, but with good rappers (and Father MC).
Nas ft. Redhead Kingpin, Spinderella, Rob Base, Father MC, Monie Love, Mike D (of the Jungle Brothers), EST (of 3XDope), Positive K, Das EFX, Lords of the Underground, Dres (of Black Sheep), MC Shan, Raheem (Furious Five), Doctor Ice (UTFO), Kangol (UTFO), Kool Moe Dee, Sha Rock (Funky Four +1), Tito (Fearless Four), Grandmaster Caz (Cold Crush Brothers), Lique (Isis of X Clan), Dana Dane, Pebblee Poo & Just Ice : Where Are They Now ?
and even if no one was really expecting it, he did a West Coast remix.
Nas, Breeze, Kam, King Tee, Candyman, Threat, Ice-T, Sir Mix-A-Lot and the Conscious Daughters & DJ Bobcat : Where Are They Now ? (West Coast Remix)

-----
New songs by Lil Sci from Scienz Of Life Hit Me and by Scienz Of Life Hood Stock produced by Stones Throw intern, Flying Lotus.
-----
Another old song by Skillz Babiwon.

1996 recap
So it's that time of the year when every blogger publish his top 10 or top 50 of last year. We all know damn well that nobody cares about other peoples' taste, so we won't go there. Plus, I didn't buy ten good albums in 2006.
So here is my top 23 for the year 1996, mixed by Bachir and me. (sendspace link)
This is actually the first hour of our radio show from last week on HDR, but with the exception of Mother Superia, it's exactly what I was playing in 1996 on Radio Pomme.
Enjoy.
Tracklisting :
Lord Finesse : Check The Method
Ak Skills : Check The Flava
Mad Skillz, Q Tip & Large Professor : Extra Abstract Skillz
Large Professor : The Mad Scientist

Killarmy : Wake Up
Xzibit : Paparazzi

Help The Coup
From Boots Riley Myspace : http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=27095933
We lost everything in that crash and fire. We were packed to live and do shows on that bus for a month. Most of us had every stitch of clothing we owned on there. We lost clothes, computers, recording equipment, cameras, IDs, phones, keys to cars and homes. We lost cash.We lost all our damn instruments and equipment to perform with. We were and are happy to walk away with our lives.
But now we're home.
Most of the band touring with The Coup has kids, rent that won't quit, bills, and holiday expenses coming. We need money, because like I said the band doesn't have the tools that they make a living with. Not only did we lose cash and material things on the bus, but we also were depending on this tour for money to make it through.
It may take a year for us to see any money from the insurance company.
I have set up a Paypal account so people can make donations for The Coup. The money will be split between Me (Boots Riley), Silk E, Q, Steve Wyreman (guitar), and Riccol. Mr. Lif is setting one up on his site and when I have that info, we'll let you know. There should be a button right below this that allows you to donate even without a paypal account.
If you have an account, ours is thecoupbuscrash@gmail.com.
Thank you in advance to anyone who does this, this is a really crazy situation. I never thought I would would be doing something like this. I also never thought that we would almost die like like that.
We're grateful for anything you can do.
Thank you,
Boots Riley

Imagine Chuck Berry being told that nobody will understand rock n roll, or Billie Holiday with a pen and a pad and somebody sayin you're just too sad
Award of the most useless come back goes out to : Kool Keith and the ultramagnetic mc's !

Killer Mike is giving hope to all the producers who can't play the piano.

In case you didn't know : Hip-Hop died a long time ago.

They buggin say Nastradamus just wasn't one of my hardess', sold over a mil regardless.

I know a lot of people don't get it,but I love Nas' strategy, which consist of sticking to Incredible Bongo Band samples. I mean, overused samples are the essence of hip-hop, no ? From Made You Look to Hip Hop Is Dead via Thief's Theme and Serious with AZ, all those Michael Viner's samples have been put to good use.
Totally unrelated : Ain't Hard To Tell demo(fixed) and Rise And Fall.

And the music plays on even after we're gone, from Brooklyn to Qadima to Ramallah and on.
Finally Nadav Samin has a myspace, and he has incredible new music on it : The Long Night and HB Reprise. Maybe you know him under his old MC name, Siah.

Internet sensation NYoil had people talking about his video on YouTube just a week ago, but apparently they don't want to host it now. Oh well, here is the mp3 : Get Lynched produced by Fantom of the Beats.

Puba of the styles like miles and shit, like 60's funky worms with waves and perms...
Like Me, from Hyphy Producer/MC Beeda Weeda's new album. Turfology 101 is out on Hiero Imperium. For those who don't know, a lot of hyphy producers are "backpackers" at heart. Why did you think ex-Cosmic Slop Shop member Rick Rock sampled some random Digable Planets vocals in E-40's Yay Area and now throws in some Tribe Called Quest sample in Too Short's Keep Bouncin ?
-----
Let's be clear : I never bought anything by any member of D-Block. I don't like any track they've ever been on. But that Take Everything is killing it !

I'm takin ya back come follow me
Much to my surprise, Boot Camp click new album is not a totally worthless waste of plastic. The Last Stand has more good songs than any of their individual albums of the past 10 years. My favourite is
Souljah.
-----
Sadat X's collaboration with J-Zone from the new album, Black October.
-----
Thanks to The Game, name dropping is becoming fashionable again. Expect Tim Dog and Chino XL to make their big come back soon. But for now it's The Juggaknots name checking everyboy they've ever met on Namesake and dissing Stretch Armstrong by the way.

I just come back from well deserved vacations, but sorry for you, I didn't bring back a lot a music. Well, Madrid isn't know for its music scene anyway. I mean except this is the most decent hip-hop record I found there : DNI : Decir Funk
At least I heard good DJs and they make good comps, check the Jazz Travels compiled by Casbah 73 on Hitop Records. It Has dope Soul, Psyche, Bossa and, yes, jazz tracks, like Daniel Lencina's Negro en sol menor
Over the last month I've listen to that song a million time. It's on Exile's album, rhymes by Blu.
In recent bad news, I heard that Z-Ro got incarcerated recently. Let's hope that when the Mo City Don comes out, he'll get half the coverage TI has.

Which motherfucker stole my flow
Busta Rhymes and Q-Tip used to be like Sadat X and Diamond : you don't really why they do all these tracks together, but they just sound better than with their own crew. They used to share managers, crew members, producers etc. Now, I don't mean that what they did recently sucks, but stuff like Come On Down, Step It Up , Wild Hot, Ill Vibe or One, Two Shit was so much better.
Now that Busta is all about calling women bitches and pushing kilos, he has found a new friend in Raekwon. And if State Of Grace, Baggage Handlers or Goldmine are any indication, this new friendship might a good thing for us.
